Remembering A Day of Infamy
December 7, 2011Today we remember the 70th Anniversary of the attack of Pearl Harbor. This short video was done by The Washington Times and gives a look at the personal sacrifice made for our freedom.
Take a moment to remember those who have fought in the past and the present giving their lives for others.
Representative Rachel Burgin
Happy Veterans Day!
November 11, 2011On November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson was the first to proclaim an Armistice Day in the United States of America. In proclaiming the holiday, he said:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
Ninety-two years later, we continue to pay homage to the men and woman, past and present, who place their lives on the line for our country. I wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank all of those in the armed forces that have served, and continue to serve and protect, our great nation.
I also want to personally thank my grandfather, Fletcher Burgin, who served during WWII in the United States Navy on the USS Sumter. He will always be my hero.
Many events have been planned for our Veterans throughout the next two days. I encourage our community to consider President Wilson’s request and honor our local heroes. I will be traveling to the events below to pay my respects to our local veterans.
- Veterans Appreciation Celebration at Bell Shoals Baptist Church held Thursday at 7 PM
- The Veterans Day Observance at Serenity Meadows Memorial Park and Funeral Home held Friday at 8:30 AM
- Annual Veterans Day Service at Hillsborough County Veterans Park held Friday at 11 AM
Again, all who have served in the armed forces and chosen to risk your lives for the sake of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness have my deepest appreciation. In addition, we recognize that tremendous sacrifice each of your families has endured to benefit others. Humbly, we say “Thank you” on this Veterans Day.
God bless you all,
Rachel Burgin
